Submission Guidelines: Your historical research or presentation is welcome at the West River History Conference! From amateur to student or professional historian, our mission provides a platform for preserving the region’s historical record. It’s simple to participate!

Here’s how to let us know you are interested in presenting at the conference:(due by July 1, 2026)

  • SUBMIT TITLE with a BRIEF DESCRIPTION

  • TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS SUPPLIED by conference:

    • The following are available to all Presenters:

      • podium with microphone

      • computer/projector/screen/with technician

      • If you have other/additional requirements, please specify in your application.

  • PRESENTATION LENGTH limited to 25 minutes

  • SUGGESTED TOPIC (2026 theme) Milestones: Markers on our Black Hills Journey

    However, you may present historical research on any subject.

  • PRESENTATION FORMAT: can be any of the following:

    • formal paper

    • oral history

    • heritage art (play, poetry, artwork, or other format as approved)

  • PUBLICATION If you choose to offer your research for publication in the annual WRHC Collected Papers digital archive held at the Leland D, Case Library, Black Hills State University, Spearfish, South Dakota:

    • complete the copyright release portion of the form below and/or a full print and audio-video release provided on arrival at the conference.

    • submit your final work by December 31, 2026 (format: PDF or Word document)

  • REGISTRATION You must register and pay attendance fees to participate as a Presenter at the conference. Only WRHC members, a separate fee, are eligible for the Early Bird discount on conference pricing. No exceptions, please!
